Another year, another Midwest Gaming Classic. This would make my third trip there and the second time I've hosted Turbo Fest. Same location, though instead of taking place around May/June as usual, the MGC took a stab by scheduling itself at the end of March - ouch! Despite this, the year was another success, with a seemingly even bigger audience than the other years. Not only was the attendance better, but the quality of the show was arguably better this year as well.

Like 2007, the amount of arcade cabinets were lacking again this year. However, there seemed to be a few more and I thought the games themselves were better. Unlike 2007, pinball machines made a come back, around the same quantity as 2006. From classy pinball boards to 90's and beyond, there was plenty enough pinball to tickle your fancy and it's all for free play of course. On the downside, a lot of machines weren't working, typically the older ones.

Now I praised the vendor selection last year, which was the big highlight for me that year, but this year did even better. This year they were able to organize the main hall to fit even more vendors, which pretty much transformed the whole room into a big retro gaming shop. Lots of returning stores, such as Warpzone and Mad Gear, were back as well as some new individual sellers, like our good friend TurboSage of GamEscape, who had some awesome deals. There was just so much stuff for sale with such a wide variety of stuff. Given this, I probably bought more this year than any other year and this was a fantastic opportunity for both game buyers and sellers alike.

The museum area seemed about the exact same as last year, with a few new things here and there (including the ultra rare Super A'Can!). Considering the amount of goodies in the museum area in general, this is a good thing mind you. Turbo Fest mostly depended on me this year and despite the fact that less games were available, it was pretty much the same deal, except I had a special "TurboPong" demo specially made for this year. Unfortunately JagFest didn't seem to offer as much this year.

If you are a competitive gamer, this year was a good year. Aside from the usual pinball tournaments held at the MGC, the shmup tourney made a return, and this year also included new tournaments for Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Halo 3, possibly more. To top it all off, Twin Galaxies founder, Walter Day, made an appearance this year to give away specially made Billy Mitchell hot sauce and the new Twin Galaxies score books for whoever could achieve the highest score in Rally X, and among other things.

The speaker area this year took some bad hits, unfortunately. It was worse enough last year when the speaker area didn't have any actual room, but this year it just took place in the hallway, which made it very noisy and distracting with lots of people walking by. Ben Heck just made a continuation of his speech last year and Trickman Terry and Sushi X gave more EGM stories. Our favorite returning speaker, Marty Goldberg, had a speech dealing with the revival of MicroProse, which as a topic wasn't terribly interesting, but at least Marty can make the speech worthwhile! Despite all of this speaker room drama, Walter Day's speech made up for it. Walter discussed Twin Galaxies and competitive gaming in general and had a wonderful question and answer session mostly dealing with the famous recently released documentary, "King of Kong". I was even able to talk to Walter after his speech and got his autograph - he's truly as friendly as he appears in the King of Kong!

So with an improved arcade and pinball selection over last year and even better vendors, it's safe for me to say that 2008 was better than 2007, possibly even better than my first trip in 2006. If only the speaker room didn't fall as flat and if there were more arcade cabinets, then in that case I think I could definitely say that 2008 was king. I was certainly skeptical about this year's MGC since it was taking place in March, but I was very impressed. With the constant growth of the convention, it makes me wonder if a bigger location will be necessary in the future...

Thanks goes to NASAchusetts for taking the photos this year! There are lots and lots of photos this year!

Taking a different entrance this year!

The Main Hall has officially converted to "Vendor Hall".

And now we step into the Vendor Hall.

Team Fremont is at it again.

Walter Day appears to be a guest on Team Fremont's podcast...

And Marty too!

Damn, that's a big Atari 5200 box!

Nice carpet.

You can see the big garage door in the background from where cabinets are brought in.

On to the vendors!

Our favorite seller Warpzone sitting there. Looks like he's tired from us harassing him all the time for crappy games.

It's our good friend Sean Kelly! And he's drank a shitload of beers! What about the drive back to Chicago, Sean!?

This store had a ton of video game toy stuff, but everything was too damn expensive.

I wish I would've noticed that ASCII six button PCE controller earlier.

A snerd's dream!

A even nicer snerd dream!

Mad Gear is just packed full of the good stuff.

Translated NES ROM cartridges, very nice!

Gotta love the original Game Boy box.

We asked this seller if he would sell his blanket to us, but he wouldn't :( .

Can't forget about the pinball vendors!

I just love the sight of bare pinball PCBs.

Super hot pinball playboards!

On to the arcades!

Our favorite Cloud cosplayer playing a game of X-Men with his cosplaying friends!

Here's me playing U.N. Squadron with Turbo Sage's kid. This kid knew everything about that game!

God I was doing so well in Burger Time, but the 8-way joystick screwed up my ladder climbing!

Mini arcades! These also used 8-way joysticks, arrr!

Oh man, Centipede! I got 6th place on the high score list on that cab.

Vector Ben playing some classic Donkey Kong!

I'm not too sure what this was, but it's fun playing four players on it.

This was a sight to behold. This poor man had a hard time whacking those moles and was getting a little pissed off from it.

Pinball!!!

CHACHING! CHACHING! DUN! DUN! CHACHING!

I wanted to play that Super Mario pinball!

Love that Taxi cab.

Technical repairs. Bummer.

You can never have too much pinball.

Walter Day at the pinball machines!

Dr. Lazers standing next to a guy that's really serious about his pinball!

The good old museum area.

Notice the Ralph Baer signature on that Odyssey!

The legendary Odyssey 2.

Some kind of Odyssey 2 add-on?

How about some Odyssey 3000?

Or some Odyssey 4000?

Atari 2600 Rainbow Bright Edition! I'd love to lick that.

Now that's some serious controller action.

ASK ABOUT THE NEW CARTRIDGE OF THE MONTH

The Intellivision Burger Time is a piece of cake.

Coleco has nothing on Comico!

This system is the coolest! I really, really want one!

Vectrex! 100% LaZer Dorks approved!

So we've all seen this, but who can pass up Duck Hunt?

Those Master Systems got some style.

Peanut Butter & Jelly!

X'Eye and CDX - they're like brothers.

Okay now we're getting into some ugly new school Genesis action.

Memory Card included!

JagFest! Very rarrr!

Oh one of these days I'm finally going to get one!

FM Towns Marty Goldberg!

Sooo European!

I was very impressed to see an actual Super A'Can there!

Here's Vector Ben playing the Super A'Can. That game is pretty hard!

Super with MAS sticks. I'll stick with Keranu sticks!

I can just imagine how sweaty those controllers are.

Unfortunately, the non-retro systems get the most attention :( .

Where's the Game Boy Pocket?

An interesting selection of portable systems.

An even more interesting selection of portable systems?>/center>

I think this guy officially has the largest Lynx collection on the face of the planet.

Another piece of plastic I'd love to lick.

I'm interested in knowing more about those handles.

Now that's pretty awesome.

Somehow I missed this when I was there! It's always been my dream for there to be a video phone like in the movies! Why hasn't this caught on!?

Okay get ready for a long list of classic computer pictures.

Wasn't there a dinosaur cartoon character named Sinclair?

Super sleek shot. I'm gonna have to set this as my wallpaper. If anyone's interested in the high res version of this shot, let me know.

Is that Phil Hartman and Bill Cosby in those pamphlets?

I'd love to rub my finger tips on those keys.

A very color coded keyboard!

Apple just doesn't make computers like they used to.

NASA loved playing Astro Smash on this!

Okay I have no idea what the hell this is.

This thing is pretty cool! Too bad it broke during the show the year before :( .

That's some high tech equipment!

I hope the camera flashes didn't yellow these systems.

So has Atari made any computers recently?

Whoa! Sweet calculators!

I imagine this hardware smells very nice.

Could this be the same computer that Emmit played Dr. J vs Larry Bird on!?

Oooh, black keys just look so much sexier sometimes.

You don't see kids these days storing files on cassettes no more!

Okay Marty, just how in the world do you manage to store all of these computers in your home?

A very cool piece of art. It even lights up with funky colors.

Ooh, is that an Atari watch?

How did Klax find it's way in there? That isn't the 90's!

Jeez I don't even think those cards were scratched.

Ahh, just look at those classic logos.

Here's Turbo Fest before we set it up...

...and here it is after we set it up!

Super Grafx playing the pixel perfect conversion of Ghouls n' Ghosts. Thanks goes to DHG Hunter of DieHardGamer.Com for supplying the Super Grafx!

Turbo Duo playing me and Tomaitheo's (A.K.A., Malducci) Turbo Pong demo. Thanks again for programming it, Tom!

PC Engine + CD-ROM2 set up playing Bomberman '94. (yeah okay so it's not a TGCD like the card says)

Turbo Express and the games I brought with, as well as a Turbo Vision!

Turbo Fest getting some attention!

Don't you just love my Turbo Grafx 16 shirt?

Me playing some Aldynes for Super Grafx. That game is pretty awesome!

Large gathering for the Super Smash Bros. Brawl tournament.

Guitar Hero tournament, or so I think.

This is where the shmup tournament took place; I don't think it was actually going on at this point. I see the Kamino Stick still made an appearance.

This is where the Halo 3 tournament took place. Is that man holding a red ringed 360?

Hot sauce specially made by Billy Mitchell for the MGC! Given to various tournament winners.

Yep this is where the speaker room was located, IN THE HALLWAY! (also notice our favorite cosplayer to the left)

Our favorite speaker of all time, Marty Goldberg.

Walter Day's speech, with a shot of him holding the new 2008 Twin Galaxies score book.

Here's someone that's heading to FunSpot to break some kind of high score, talking to Walter about hot sauce.

Ben Heck and his phony speech!

It's our favorite cosplayer attending a speech!

The stuff we bought on the first day. We bought a bunch more the next day.

I proudly wore and kept my MGC wrist strap ticket... for the third time.

The End
