Dream a Little Dream
Corey and Corey action in this hot 80's movie title. That's right, when I say "Corey and Corey action", I mean Corey Feldman and Corey Haim! In fact, this has to be my favorite movie with both of the Coreys in it and one of my all time favorite 80's movies. Dream a Little Dream has the touch.
Dream a Little Dream's story is unique and with Corey & Corey in it, the story is presented nicely. High school student Bobby Keller(Corey Feldman) is in love with this hot chick in a leotard named "Lainie". Dinger strongly warns Bobby about Lannie's crazy boyfriend "Joel, Psycho Joel" but Bobby can't control his feelings. So after a long night of Bobby and Dinger discussing Bobby's latest love interests and just hanging out, they fall asleep and then prepare for a rad day at school in the morning - 1980's style! As Bobby and his school gang take their usual path to school, they cut through old man Coleman's yard and Coleman yells at them again.
Now to focus on Coleman's story. Coleman is a philosophical man with spirtual beliefs and is working on a natural scientific experiment on dreams by trying to enter another person's consciously and he's only told his wife Helen and his best friend Ike about this. A day passes and Coleman decides to spend a wonderful day with Helen and Bobby and Dinger have a day on their own as well (non-homosexual). After a long day, Coleman wants to test his experiment with Helen on that night and Helen finally agrees to do so, though she just finds it funny. As Coleman conducts his experiment, Lainie had a fight with Joel and rode off on her bike and Bobby and Dinger are rushing back home for no reason and all of a sudden CRASH! Bobby and Lannie ran into each other just as Coleman was in the butter zone of his experiment.
As Coleman wakes up, he sees Bobby's parents and Dinger, who are practically strangers to him. Coleman looks into a mirror and is shocked to find out that he is in Bobby's body. However Bobby isn't in Coleman's body and both Bobby and Coleman communicate in Coleman's dreams. Coleman, as Bobby Keller, must figure out how to switch back within a certain deadline or he could be trapped in Bobby's body forever while the real Bobby is just trapped in a dream, which he doesn't mind at all really.
Phew, that's quite a story to get of the way. It's not so easy explaining the story to this film and it's probably not easy to understand the story when you haven't seen it. In fact, this movie is needs to be watched at least twice to really understand the story, possibly more. But whether you understand the story or not, it's still great for it's ultimate 80's charm.
Feldman's acting is on top in Dream a Little Dream. Feldman not only has to play a rad high school kid for only a little bit of the movie, but he has to act as if he's an old, spirtual man in a young person's body! Seeing Feldman's acting in this movie is what those credit card commercials would call "priceless". And to the Feldman fans out there, I'm sure you're all aware of Feldman's old obsession of wanting to be like his idol Michael Jackson, and Dream a Little Dream has a special treat regarding to this :) :) :) , which I won't spoil anymore besides the screenshot shown and what I have said. Unfortunately, Haim doesn't have a big role like Feldman, but he's still seen very often throughout the movie as an outstanding co-starr; you have to love his hair style in this movie. Not only are the Corey's acting on top, but so is William McNamara's, who plays Lainie's insane boyfriend, Joel. I'm not familar with McNamara outside Dream a Little Dream, but from what I can tell in Dream in a Little Dream, he plays a terrific psychotic character! He seems to have massive moodswings during any possibly scene (this one scene with Feldman in it is extreme where he goes from curious, to SUPER pissed off, to the southside Chicago blues.) and he also does this thing where he points his fingers, and he does this VERY often. I should count how many times he does it just like how I sometimes like to count how many times Christian Slater raises his arms in the air in all of his roles.
Dream a Little Dream is loaded with top quality 80's style. The beginning of the movie with Feldman and Haim getting ready for school is an 80's treat! One 80's feature that sticks out the most in Dream a Little Dream is the radical soundtrack! I am a man who has seen many 80's movies and have heard many 80's soundtracks as well, but I think I have to say that out of all the 80's film soundtracks, Dream a Little Dream has to have the best. The songs they decided to put in the movie are songs not only sound like they came from 80's hot paradise, but each song used in the movie perfectly fit the scene, PERFECTLY. Hearing Van Morrison's "Into the Mystic" during the scene of the Bobby's crash and Coleman's experiment allow the viewer to feel the magic of what was going on during this super natural body switch, or hearing the upbeat sound of Fee Waybill's "You'd Better Wait" while Bobby is chasing through the school hallways to find Lainie to have an important conversation gives you the rush Bobby felt! Oh and don't think these are the only wonderful music scenes, because the movie is loaded with them!
For me, Dream a Little Dream is a classic 80's movie and easily one of my all time favorites. Scew the people that say something like "Oh my god, the Breakfast Club is the best 80's movie!", because even though a movie like The Breakfast Club is still cool, it just doesn't even compare to many other 80's movies, especially Dream a Little Dream. While there are other fantastic Corey & Corey movies like License to Drive, The Lost Boys, and Last Resort (yes I said Last Resort), Dream a Little Dream has to be my favorite. Dream a Little Dream is the best.
